FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas football snapped its FBS losing streak Saturday night with a 34-6 win over Tulsa at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. The Razorbacks are 2-2 heading into next Saturday’s trip to Texas A&M. KJ Jackson threw for 285 yards and two total touchdowns. Chris Marshall caught nine passes for 195 yards and a score. The defense held the Golden Hurricane to 168 yards and took the ball twice after halftime. That is a real win. It is still not an SEC win.
Tulsa arrived 3-0 without starter Baylor Hayes. Arkansas arrived 1-2 after Utah and Georgia. The scoreboard said the Hogs were the better team. The tape still shows why College Station will not.
10 things the Razorbacks did right
- They closed the losing streak. Two straight FBS losses had the building tight. A 34-6 home night ends that talk and gives Ryan Silverfield a clean week.
- Chris Marshall was the offense. Nine catches, 195 yards, and a 20-yard touchdown. Tulsa coach Tre Lamb said it at the half: they could not cover No. 6.
- KJ Jackson ran the night. He started, stayed in, and finished with 22-of-34 passing plus rushing scores of 10 and 11 yards. The two-quarterback fog lifted for one Saturday.
- The front won first down. Tulsa finished with 48 rushing yards. Quincy Rhodes and the edge kept Dexter Williams II in the pocket after the first series.
- Takeaways finally showed. Ben Bogle recovered a third-quarter fumble. Shelton Lewis stripped another in the fourth. Both became points.
- Max Gilbert was automatic. He hit from 23, 35, 29, and 38. Four makes kept drives from dying when the red zone stalled.
- They owned the clock. Arkansas held the ball nearly 28 minutes and ran 64 plays to Tulsa’s 45.
- The secondary stayed home. Tulsa managed 120 passing yards. No 40-yard dagger flipped the night the way Utah and Georgia did.
- They answered the only scare. After Damari Alston’s 1-yard touchdown made it 16-6, Jackson hit Marshall for 20 yards on the next possession.
- The series streak held. Arkansas has beaten Tulsa 20 straight times since 1977. History is not a scheme. It still matters here.
10 things they must fix before Texas A&M
- Finish red-zone trips as touchdowns. Silverfield said it at the half. Four Gilbert field goals is a win over Tulsa. It is a loss in Kyle Field.
- The run game is still last in the conversation. Arkansas rushed for about 74 yards at 2.5 per carry. Sutton Smith and Braylen Russell need four yards before second-and-long becomes a passing down again.
- Stop taking sacks on the goal line. Back-to-back sacks by Hudson Ball and Kyran Duhon turned a fourth-quarter trip into a 38-yard kick. Texas A&M will not miss that cue.
- Protect third-and-manageable. The Hogs still bog down once they reach the 20. Play-calling has to stop living on fade-and-hope.
- One starter, not a committee. Jackson earned the week. Name him and build the script around his keep and Marshall. A split room against the Aggies is a gift.
- Do not donate first downs. A roughing-the-passer flag helped Tulsa’s only scoring drive. SEC officials will not need a second invitation.
- Tighten the edge on keeps. Williams still found a 15-yard run to the 1. Mike Elko’s quarterback will punish a late fit worse than that.
- Get a second receiver paid. Marshall cannot be the only answer when the safety rolls. Jamari Hawkins, Jaden Platt, and the tight ends have to punish the bracket.
- Turn pressure into sacks on schedule. The pass rush won the night in volume. It still let Tulsa convert a long third-down sequence on the 81-yard touchdown drive.
- Treat this like a floor, not a ceiling. Tulsa was a step down. Texas A&M is Saturday at 6 p.m. CT in College Station. The standard is what happens there, not what happened here.
What Saturday actually bought
Arkansas football needed a win that did not require an apology. It got one. Marshall is a first-read problem. Jackson can move chains when the pocket is clean. The defense can shrink a mid-major offense. None of that travels to Kyle Field by itself. The Razorbacks are 2-2, 0-1 SEC, with Tennessee the week after A&M. Fix the run and the red zone before the next Saturday that counts.
